A Birthday Overshadowed

It's my birthday but I'm feeling too sad right now to say much. My sister had to put her eight-month-old puppy to sleep today due to a mysterious and painful paralysis. I know how miserable she's feeling tonight, so I can't really feel celebratory either. Most of my family loves their pets beyond all measure and reason.

Chickie Bunny (my niece and nephew named her after her Easter arrival) was a sweet and funny yellow lab. She loved the water, kids, and especially my sister's family. This is her at my mom's house in California last July. She's about to jump into the pool. I want to remember her like this.

Happy birthday, Sungold! I am really sorry about your sister's dog. That is so sad.

I'm so sorry to hear that, dear friend. Kind thoughts to you, sister, niece, nephew - your kids must be feeling the hurt too.

I'm so sorry to hear about the dog, but Happy Birthday none the less. On a related note, I'm 21 today.

Thanks, Sugar Mag. I did have a nice day up to that point - I gave an interview on the election to student radio journalists from Leipzig (yeah, my main qualification is that I can speak German) and did some door-knocking for Obama and no one was mean to me. I count that a success.

Political Cat, thanks for your thoughts. It's funny, the kids are quite comforted by the thought of a new puppy very soon. So that's what they'll do. My niece and nephew want to name the next one Chickie Bunny, too. I spoke with my sis today and she's feeling somewhat better. The last days were hellish, so they are actually feeling some relief, knowing that that CB is no longer suffering severe pain.

Hi Jake! Thanks for the kind words. Happy Birthday to you, too! We went out to China Panda last night and had a pretty yummy meal. Funny, I thought you must be 21 already. I hope you're celebrating ... but not *too* much. After all, it's a weeknight, young man. :-)

I am so sorry to read about the puppy. Animals are usually the best family members!

Thanks so much, Smirking Cat. Chickie Bunny was a real sweeheart. Luckily my sister has a really nice family - even if you exclude present company. :-)
